I discovered "The List" after I found one of your articles at Words On Us. I liked it, and that web site, so much I did a search for your name on Google. That's how I found the article on Secular Homeschooling.

It burns my biscuits when people borrow someone's content and the audacity to refuse to credit you!?! Well, I can only trust in karma at that point. And I totally understand how emotions can get in the way of a proper response.

I blogged about "The List," and included a link back to this page, so hopefully more people will avoid going to any other web site but yours; and maybe think twice before they borrow an entire article by someone else without first getting permission. Take care!

Your list gave me a great giggle, and I read it right on your site! I'm not terribly sophisticated about search engines, but a link to your list came up on the third page when I searched for "copy editors homeschool." That suggests that you must be getting at least some traffic, anyway. As for whether you've just earned a subscriber, I'm just starting to think about whether I might be able to home-school my youngest child, (a choice I would need to support by launching an editing and/or writing business from home), so I'm not ready to subscribe to your magazine. But if I do decide to go that route, I will certainly subscribe.

Oh Deborah, I'm so sorry you've been going through all this. Thankfully, people have been getting the word out. I found out through Alasandra's article.

I'm happy to report that my own local homeschooling e-loop did include appropriate links to your magazine when they posted about the BHWL.

I'll see if I can get an article up about this by the weekend at the latest. I've been so crazy busy lately, as I know you have, too.

Thank you for leaving a very Professional comment on my: "not so real Blog". First I do apologize for not playing by the rules. I did first read the article on another site for Moms. The article made no reference to the original Writer "You". I am being careful in choosing my words and being sure not to use all cap's. Just to let you know that this is all new to me and their are lots of us out here...who are totally unaware, this does not make it right! Sorry you are going through this. I think you should get used to it. Sorry if that sounds harsh.

I've been blogging for 3 years and my content has been lifted as well.

You actually approached me in the past asking me to write something for your publication without me getting paid. I didn't take you up on that yet.

I am glad you are publishing Secular Homeschooling. But here is a newsflash. Many homeschoolers are cheap and not only do they want stuff for free but they will infringe on copyright if they feel it serves their best interest.

The two Yahoo Groups! I'm on for local homeschoolers in my area, both had your piece in it in its entirety, which is a clear violation of copyright law. I cringed when I saw that because I hate seeing that.

As to Christian homeschoolers breaking the copyright law and not giving you credit or saying the name of the publication well shame on them. What they are doing is not Christian if they are doing that. And by the way, a lot of Christian homeschooling parent bloggers break copyright law on their blogs by lifting content from other places.

I think your piece was also published in the discussion groups for homeschoolers corner at Paperbackswap.com if my memory serves me correctly.

Sometimes even the listowners of Yahoo Groups! support breaking copyright law by letting it happen. One list I'm on has a rule against breaking copyright law but they let it go on.

I also received that article by private email from various people not linking back to your site.

Anytime our info is on the web it can be lifted and not credited.

I recently gave permission for a blog post of mine to be reprinted in a homeschooling newsletter. I got no payment but asked for a copy of it. They could not even bother to follow through on that.

Yesterday I got a request to reprint an entire series of blog posts I did, thousands of words, with no payment. I hesitate to respond as I don't know if I can even get a copy of the publication so I can put it in my portfolio to show I was published somewhere other than on my blog.

Information abounds on the Internet and it seems not many care about copyright infringement. I do. But I don't stress too much when I've been plagarized because there is little I can do about it. And I don't even make real money from my blogging endeavor.

A few of us left comments there slamming them for they did and not linking to the proper site. They appeared for a while and then were deleted.

What awful people they are! They owe Deborah a public apology and link to her blog and her homeschooling site. It's one thing to do something like this because you don't know any better; it's reprehensible to know you are wrong and still refuse to make things right. They're thieves, plain and simple.

YES, they took it down, but they STILL did not do what was right - rather than putting the first couple of items from the list and then pointing to the full list on Deborah's site, they *completely removed the list* AND the link to Deborah.

So, now that they drew the traffic to content they stole from Deborah, they have thrown that content away rather than give her proper credit.

Their behavior is reprehensible.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. I've commented elsewhere on this but wanted to repeat here that the nature of social media is that it is vulnerable to this kind of attack. All one has to do is copy some interesting content, shoot it out over the social news sites and watch as others pick it up. It's a major problem on all social news sites.
