If you're a reasonably nerdy type -- actually, these days I don't think you have to be much of a nerd at all to have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. So regardless of your nerd status (I would rank mine as middling -- way dorkier than the ordinary population, but positively weak compared to the die-hards), you may know that hobbits give, rather than receive, presents on their birthdays.
Reading this as a kid, my first thought was, "RIP OFF!" Before the age of thirty or so, any suggestion of presents flowing from rather than toward one's precious self is met with shudders of revulsion and inward revolt.
But now that I'm about to turn thirty-eleven (tomorrow, or the Ides of May as I like to think of it), I'm feeling Hobbity.
Post here with a verbal offering of some kind. It could be about hobbits. It could be about the magazine. It could be a suggestion for an article you'd like to see. It could be a link to an online gift certificate to Godiva. I'm not hinting, I'm just saying.
After I recover from my birthday hangover, I'll use a random number generator to pick someone. And I'll send them tangible proof that if you really try, you can squeeze six issues into one of the small-sized flat-rate postal mailers.

Here's a line I came up with:
Authority with neither humanity nor intelligence deserves only ridicule and defiance.
(not Hobbity at all).
We're not very Hobbity either. In appreciation of our own materialism- we (the three boys reading over my shoulder and I) salute your selflessness if offering such a generous birthday giveaway. I love your blog. It's very refreshing to read about other homeschooling parents who aren't saintly and perfect. Real people are so much more likable:-)
Husband is the hobbity one, but did you know that they are filming "The Hobbit" right now? I'll shamefully admit I've never read the books, only seen the movies...
I love your blog and the magazine, and I'll be renewing as soon as I sit down and do my bills! :)
My Thai friends, who are not Hobbits, make dinner for their friends in celebration of their own birthdays.
I'm sure it works out well for them because it ensures that people will want to celebrate their life -- especially since they make great Thai food.
Here's my hobbity bit. My daughter named her guinea pig Pippin because she isn't so bright (the GP, not my daughter lol)and she eats all day long. Oh yeah, and GP have hobbit-like feet. Her other GP is named Trumpkin because she reminds of us the black dwarves in Narnia.

PS Did you know that Gandalf is really an angel? Who knew, eh? (OK all the truly geeky folks do, but it was news to me lol. Reading the books I always thought he was a wizard.)

Happy thirty-eleventh!
My favorite quote:
"It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?"
Winnie The Pooh.
Happy thirty-eleventh birthday.
Happy Birthday! I think we'll have a half-day in your honor. And some chocolate. :)
oh, happy birthday!! Am I eligible if I've won a giveaway already? I haven't even gotten the new issue (which will be my first) so this may be covered already, but I'd like to see how people hack together kits and activities to save money. (For example, we got a butterfly kit, which I don't regret, but then I figured out how to do it much cheaper in the future, that sort of thing.)
Hope you had a great birthday!
A big hobbity Happy Birthday to you! Dh is a twin. He and his twin do not exchange birthday presents b/c they said it's not fair to have to give someone a birthday present on your birthday ha ha ha. It works for them!
I'm just starting to read the Hobbit to my boys and I can't wait! 8-)
I did celebrate my birthday hobbit-style this year. I couldn't afford to go all out, but I did give some books as gifts.
"Twas a good thing to do.
